I have created this page to help understand colors and genetics more. It is currently being worked on when I have time so it is not fully finished. I will go into all the most common black, brown, and red genetics. Since I do not breed brindle or agouti cockapoos I will not be writing the genetics to those here but, feel free to visit the website below if you would like to dive deeper into any dog coat color genetics. It is one of my favorite resources!

Dog Genetics

Black- there are many varieties of black I will go over. A solid black, a Irish spotted black, a black parti, a black phantom, a black phantom parti, a black sable, a blue merle, a blue merle phantom, a blue merle parti, and a blue merle phantom parti. The way we know a dog is black based is they will have a black nose and foot pads, and their genotype for brown (b) and red (e) will need to be dominant to cover both colors from showing. Then we can look at other modifying genes that are different then our brown and red locus. A black dog’s red e locus will be Ee or EE one or two dominants covering the recessive and its brown (b) locus needs to be Bb or BB for a dog to genetically be black.

Solid Black

All solid black puppies are Ee or EE, Bb or BB, KBKB or KBky, SS or Ssp, and mm.

Or a dog can be a recessive black kyky aa but this is very rare.

Irish Spotted Black

All irish spotted black puppies are Ee or EE, Bb or BB, KBKB or KBky, sisi or sisp, and mm.

Or a dog can be a recessive black kyky aa but this is very rare.

Black Parti

All black parti puppies are Ee or EE, Bb or BB, KBKB or KBky, spsp, and mm.

Black Phantom

Red – White

I will refer to the E locus as red throughout this explanation. The E locus is what we test for to see if a dog can produce red. If a dog is ee that means they are a red and can be from any shade of white, apricot or all the was to a dark none fading red. We can now test for intensity and can make predictions on the shade of red a litter will be based on their intensity. Now, we have to go over one more thing about red or ee dogs. The red gene ee covers or hides brown, merle, phantom and sable. What this means is we can have liver pointed reds who would be “ee” and “bb” or we can have black-pointed reds “ee” and “Bb” or “BB.” We can also have hidden merles, hidden phantoms and sables. Since red hides all these extra genes you can only see white spotting visibly on a red dog. We will go over solid red black pointed, solid red liver pointed, irish spotted red and red parti.

Solid Red Black Points

All solid red black pointed puppies are ee, Bb or BB, KBKB KBky or kyky, ayay ayat aya atat ata or aa, SS or Ssp, and mm Mm or MM.

Solid Red Liver Points

All solid red liver pointed puppies are ee, Bb or BB, KBKB KBky or kyky, ayay ayat aya atat ata or aa, SS or Ssp, and mm Mm or MM.

Red Irish Spotted with Black Points

All irish spotted red black pointed puppies are ee, Bb or BB, KBKB KBKY or kyky, ayay ayat aya atat ata or aa, SiSi or Sisp, and mm Mm or MM.

Red Irish Spotted with Brown Points

Red Parti with Brown Points

Brown

Then when we look at the brown (b) genotype it has to have two copies of the recessive gene to show the liver/brown coat and nose. Then we are able to look at other modifying genes that are different then the red locus. A brown dog’s red e locus will be Ee or EE one or two dominants covering the recessive red gene (ee) and its brown (b) locus needs to be bb for a dog to genetically be a brown based.
